About the Artist

Currently, Krystal Ramirez is finishing her last year at California State University, Long Beach pursing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with the emphasis in metal and jewelry. Every since she was a little kid, Krystal loved to draw and paint. She stated how it gave her a sense of freedom since there are no boundaries. She attended Orange County School of Arts in Santa Ana for visual arts. When she took a class involving jewelry and then she immediately fell in love with it. Initially pursuing a degree in child development, Krystal knew that it was not for her and she stuck with her heart to focus on her art pieces.

Formal Analysis

Within Krystal’s artwork, she utilizes different types of metals, such as pewter, copper, brass, steel, silver, and many more, to create pieces of art that represent a large dinner table filled with different types of plates and utensils. In addition, Krystal was able to create a dim effect that is evident and similar to many fine-dining restaurants. The way Krystal displaced her pieces was really engaging and warming because she displaces her exhibit as if it was inside an actual home.

Content Analysis

Krystal’s work serves as an exploration of the relationships that formed around the dinner table. She stated that her art pieces are a directly reflection of the people that have influenced her. Ever since she was young, Krystal always admired the ritual of meal preparation. Something about the raw materials that were turned into such magnificent pieces but being so savory at the same time constantly interests Krystal. Another reason why she created the art pieces and exhibit the way she did was because she greatly valued family time. As a result, she chose to create an atmosphere and exhibit of the dinner table because it was the location at which big decisions were made and truths were shared.

Synthesis/ My Experience

I really enjoyed the exhibit because I can relate to what Krystal was trying to express through her exhibit and artworks. Similar to Krystal, I would also share many big news and decisions with my family. In addition, it was the place where I was able to bond with my family the most since we are all busy with our own things in life. After viewing the exhibit, it made me reminisce about all the things that happened at my dinner table back at home.
