About the Artist

Initially, Yujia was from Beijing, China. However, she traveled to California to attend California State University, Long Beach’s School of Arts with the emphasis on graphic design. Yujia finished her bachelor’s degree in China and came to school here for her master’s degree. Yujia is very adventurous and loves to go out. When she has free time, she loves to go hiking, watch movies, and attend museums. Ever since she was young, Yujia loved to draw and she still continues to do so.

Formal Analysis

Yujia utilizes bright lights to project on the art pieces as well as the statistics due to gun violence. To create her artwork, she utilizes vinyl to create the figures and the names that were affected by gun violence. In addition, there were two television screens to project the location within the United States where situation occurred. Besides television screens, there were photos displaced that were quite abstract of many of the victims. Immediately entering the exhibit, it provided a sad and depressing feeling. Yujia uses bold colors that contrast to make her statement stand out more.

Content Analysis

According to Yujia during the interview, she stated how the purpose of her exhibition was to make people realize how serious gun violence is. Having a close relationship with her mother, Yujia constantly contacts her mother on a daily basis. Her mother is deeply worried for her since she has noticed that more international students are getting killed due to guns. As time progresses, the amount of victims due to gun violence has been increasing at an alarming rate. Yujia wanted to raise awareness to the victims that got their lives taken away. By doing so, she created a statement using images of guns and humans stating how more individuals are buying guys for protection; however, the more people buy guns, the more incidents there were.

Synthesis/ My Experience

This exhibit spoke out to me because I never realized how many cases there were due to gun violence. Just recently, there was a school shooting in the San Bernardino area. It is really scary how one day, there could be one on campus. Looking at the art pieces and the victims, it gave me chills through my spine because the list was quite long. Overall, I really enjoyed the exhibit because it opened my eyes about how guns has been a problem that has not been given the attention that it deserves.
